Whanganui Football Round Up - Week 8

WHANGANUI FOOTBALL ROUND UP - WEEK 8

Roly Taylor Championship

It took a few rounds but the mighty Marist Casuals claimed their first win of the season with a definitive 3-1 victory over the City Development team, while their club mates, Marist Celtic, got themselves prepped for their Federation Cup fixture this coming weekend with a strong 5-2 victory over the Rivercity Chiefs.

While the win was important for Celtic, the Wrightway Design City Hammers still keep their unbeaten run, edging out the Devon Barron Tiling City Wanderers with a dying minutes goal to give themselves a 1-0 victory.

The Sportz Bar Athletic Cosmos just pipped Castlecliff United St Anthony’s 3-2, with Castlecliff showing plenty of signs of improvement so far this season, while the Athletic Thirds kept the Marist Shamrocks at bay with a 2-0 victory to round out the days fixtures.

Kelly Hiroa Premiership

The Rivercity Scrappers posted a 12-0 win over Castlecliff United, pushing themselves to second on the league table, while the Treadwell Gordon Athletic Women notched a 7-1 result over Girls College to claim their first league win for the season.

In the much anticipated top of the table clash between the Wanganui City Womens 1sts and Chef’s Choice Wanganui Athletic, it was the former who came out on top, with a 1-0 victory to place them at the top of the table, 3 points clear of the chasing Rivercity Scrappers.

Horizons Premiership & Federation Leagues

In the Horizons Premiership, the GJ Gardner Wanganui Athletic Reserves were unable to replicate their feats against Hokowhitu from a couple of weeks ago, and fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat, leaving them still searching for their first points in the league.

With Versatile Wanganui City having the bye, it was only GJ Gardner Wanganui Athletic competing in the LOTTO Federation League on the weekend, who couldn’t buy themselves a goal, as they were beaten 1-0 by the visiting Napier Marist team.

The highlight of the weekend for our travelling teams was indeed the Team Ritesh Football Whanganui team in the Women’s Federation League, claiming two goals in the last 10 minutes to draw their game against Palmerston North Marist, with a 2-2 final result.
