Round 11 and the blinkin COVID is back!
Well COVID-19 meet the spirit that is the Manawatu football clubs, what an awesome effort by all just to get football done on the weekend. Massive shoutout to all those involved in clubs here, you guys and girls are awesome!
didn’t hurt that I ordered up an absolute stunner of a day Saturday!
Here’s my misinformed opinions and views on what went on around the Manawatu Football leagues this weekend.
PS – please send in photos and/or videos of your action, we would love to post them.
YORB Horizons Premiership
Athletic Reserves hosted Hokowhitu over at Wembley Park, the home side have been in decent form this season. The home side always looked in control and scored in the 14 minute with Cade Knight slotting home. Talisman Scott Burney made it safe in the 85th minute when he netted. Athletic scoring all three goals in the two-one win. Chillmax Takaro were desperately unlucky not to take all three points against PN Marist reserves. The home side were favourites on the turf but needed a 90th minute equalizer from Dylan Barry to steal a point. Great effort from Takaro. North End played PNBHS and went ahead in the 23rd minute and looked to settle but three minutes of madness saw PNBHS score in the 28th, 30th and 31st minute! The score ended three-one and another Mason Charlton brace a highlight. Feilding hosted Red Sox Reserves at Timona Park, both sides would fancy their chances in this one. Sox’s opened the scoring in the 43rd minute just before the break with Paul Van der Meullen scoring. Early in the second half youngster Tommi Hart scored (50th minute), the game seesawed from there until Aaron Richardson was able to break the deadlock and scored in the 82nd minute. Feilding moved above Red Sox after the weekend. The Massey v City game was precautionarily postponed due to a student having a COVID-19 test which late on Saturday was returned negative. This game is to be rescheduled at a mutually agreed day/time.
Round 12 key match: North End Reserves Wanganui City, City will want to ensure they reclaim top spot.
360 Logistics Championship.
Jokers weren’t joking around when they turned out against the A’s on Saturday. A’s did a fantastic job to be ahead at oranges with Gwylym Hamilton having opened the scoring but typically an inspiration pack of lollies and a few words from the senior Jokers and the machine kicked into life. Six unanswered goals in the second spell, a brace to Cain Brown and good to see AJ Toki back on the score sheet. An opening minute goal set PNBHS 2nd XI on their way but the Feilding side filled with emerging talented players stuck to the plan and battled hard throughout the match and earnt a deserved point. North End Veterans kept on their good season and were to strong for Massey out at Massey on Saturday. Israel Hawe-Muldrock netting a brace for the peoples club. In the battle of the reserve side Takaro travelled to Levin and the home side took full advantage of familiar surroundings. Three-one to Levin.
Round 12 key match: Feilding v Jokers OR Levin Reserves v PNBHS 2nd XI. 1st plays 2nd and 3rd plays 4th. A weekend to sort the league out, buckle up!
Manawatu Division 2
Wrinklies just keep on going and knocked out a win against CAC PN Greenies. DnB Marist shook Resonant Masters eight-three with a whirlwind four goal haul by Tom Sutherland, who is that man!! Massey Rangers did well to earn a point against much higher placed opposition Levin AFC Sports.
Manawatu Division 3
Vikings hosted North End Socials and it was a good day for the home sides in Dannevirke with the hosts taking it two-one. Saints did well to hold of the strong Linton Reserve side and a point each was a fair result. Celts beat the Fury in the all Marist clash this weekend and the 58th minute Bailey Wynd goal was the difference.
In a massive game Inter played Massey, the game was so big it got moved to Sunday and onto Memorial Park. Unfortunately COVID curtailed the crowds who would have enjoyed a competitive match, highlights above. Inter taking the game two-one and likely the title. Maxence Plouviez with what turned out to be the winner.
Manawatu Division 4
Hustlers break draw who-do and record a four-one win over Plunderers. Takaro Glory found their scoring boots and saw of a spirited Feilding side over at Timona Park. Rangers and Jesters played out a seven goal thriller with the visiting Dannevirke side holding on to win it four-three. Just Jesters second loss of the season.
Masters
Shamrock Rovers cause upset and throw league into a spin! Legends were shocked by an on-song Rovers side “that turned up to play” said Bruce Duncan, could Jennian Homes Feilding capitalize? Short answer, NO! RSM Old Boys found some hamstrings and did enough to earn a point in a three-all draw. Alan Gudsell with a brace for the Feilding side. PN Marist Banshees went to the superb Donnelly Park, neither side could do enough to win it and it ended nil-all.
Shoutout to Andy Hughes for finally taking fiancée Nicola out for dinner, its only been 18 months Andy!
Manawatu Women’s Premiership
Libby Dombroski is on fire! Her four goals were the difference as Massey were too clinical on the day out at Massey against North End. Evergreenz were pushed all the way by Feilding United Women and were unlucky not to take a point. The one-nil score line a reflection of how tight the game was. Mayhem by name, Mayhem by nature! Levin fought valiantly but talented Mayhem side just had too many weapons.

Manawatu Women’s Championship
Clovers put up an amazing battle this weekend and away in Dannevirke just fell short of taking points. Team manager Maxine Climo had this to say “So proud of these girls, they give 200% every game and still have smiles after every game” Valykyrie deserving of the points for putting in a solid defensive effort. Misfits weren’t messing around on Sunday and Massey couldn’t deal with the experience on the day. Sarah Cowan one of three players that scored a brace. Mysteries with inform Sarah Hughes scoring another brace were left pondering where it all came unstuck. A Maria Caryle 83rd and 88th minute brace snatching all three points for the Baby Blues. Avengers take great after match photos, just not have their team sheet so I cant tell you who scored, but the Hawks put in a decent shift against a class outfit.

Lotto Central Federation League
Round 11 saw the two front runners move away from the pack after both recording wins again on Saturday. GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic won 1-7 away to Levin with Joshua Ngapeka bagging a brace and a hat-trick to Joshua Smith moving him three goals clear in the golden boot race. In the battle of second verses third Peggy Gordons NP Rangers scored two late goals against Watsons PN Marist to win the important match 2-4 and now be 6 points clear of them and denting PN Marist’s title chances. Isles Construction Massey University got a huge 3-1 win over last seasons Champions Building King Havelock North Wanderers which now all but ends Havelocks chances to retain their title. Breakers Red Sox also got a 3-1 home win over Hawke’s Bay opposition in Alexander Electric Napier Marist. North End hang onto fifth on the table after sitting out Round 11 with the Bye.
Women's Federation Leauge
The Women's Federation League saw the Champions-in-waiting Moturoa claim a 4-1 win on the road against Massey, pushing themselves further clear, completely uncatchable with the last round ahead, and just waiting for the final game to be done to lift the Federation League Trophy for 2020.The game got off to a rapid start with Massey opening the scoring through Peta van Hattum in just the 13th minute, before Moturoa responded just 5 minutes later through Evie Newman to bring the score back level.Newman struck again in the 26th minute to give the visitors a strong foothold going into the break, with Massey still feeling like they had a chance in the game.Massey's hopes were dashed though, when Holly Kleinsman decided to join the party, scoring in the 58th minute, and then again to close out the game in the 85th minute, giving the visitors the maximum points at the final whistle. In the other game of the round, Taradale completely punished the visiting Football Whanganui, dishing them out their second 8-0 loss in as many weeks. The coming weekend will see the final games of the round both played in Whanganui at Wembley Park, with Moturoa hoping to maintain their nearly untarnished record against Taradale, while Football Whanganui host Massey.
