The weekend that was, a Manawatu Football round up.
(PS please send in any match pictures with your team sheet if you take them)
Round #3 – 20th April
Dannevirke Sports Club
Only the Vikings were in action this weekend as the Rangers put their feet up. Vikings pushed league favourites Feilding United all the way, narrowly losing 2-1. Can’t tell you who scored as I haven’t seen the team sheet……..
Feilding United AFC
The men’s 1st team continued its good start to the season and Michael Whitmore again amongst the goals. Aaron Richardson returns to his boyhood club and will add further depth to the squad. Title contenders or to early ??? No play for the development side but the Masters side kept on winning and have now got favourites written all over them! Steven “Pirate” Redmond netting in the 2-1 win.
Hawks
No play this weekend in our Women’s league.
Hokowhitu FC
The Ray White sponsored first team travelled to Wanganui with the bare 11 to start the match and reinforcements joined after the Premiership match. Scott Taylor feeling his side was right in the game and two injuries impacted his sides chances, notably Sam “Rhino” McKendry” breaking a ankle and now in a cast for 8 weeks. Recover well Sam. Taylor saying we've improved from last year and will be tough at home. James Robinson scored for the Premiership side to earn them a point against Takaro.
Levin AFC
Levin were able to put Breaks reserve side away 4-0 on Saturday with four different scorers. Great to see Jordan Calder back amongst the goals. Levin Vets played against Red Sox Legends and unfortunately didn’t trouble the scorers, 2-0 Legends.
Manawatu Plunderers
Plunderers had the weekend off and enjoyed Hot-cross buns and Easter eggs.
Marist PN
In a Block Buster match on Memorial Park PN Marist hosted Havelock North Wanderers. Despite giving it their all Marist were unable to hold off the visitors losing 4-3. Nick Carrick again showing his class netting a brace with special mention to Josh Cremen who put in a solid shift as captain.
One Staff reserve side made the trip over the bridge to face Massey reserves and on the day the students proved too strong. Alan Dingley deserves a mention as the custodian had an inspired game between the sticks making surely a save that would be in contention for save of the season tipping a shot over the bar from distance. Greenies upset the Celts 2-1 (that far to say?) and Richie’s Jesters lost 2-1 on Good Friday.
Massey
Isles Construction sponsored 1st Team took on the younger students of PNBHS and with both sides down on playing numbers it was going to be a struggle. The home side winning 3-0 and had the lion’s share of possession. Massey will be happy after keeping a clean sheet for the first time in 12 months! Charlie Mcilwaine with the pick of the goals after a sweeping team movement. The reserve side dispatched Marist 6-0 with Haachi netting a hat-trick. The 360 Logistics side played out a 10 goal thriller with it ending 5-5.
North End AFC
“The Peoples Club” took on new comers to the league Napier Marist and were unable to keep their winning streak alive, eventually going down 3-1 to the visitors. Justin Wallace scored for his brothers side in the epic 5-5 encounter out at Massey and the reserve side was unable to restrain Feilding United.
Pahiatua
Justin Brown’s side can finally celebrate the W and enjoy the Easter break after playing Good Friday against Jesters. Can they carry their form into next weekend??
Palmerston North Boys High
It was always going to put a strain on the students during the holidays and this was evident with several late registrations to bolster both squads. The 1st team played out at Massey and had bright moments and should be applauded for trying to play even when under pressure Lively wide player Alex Bowden looked dangerous but was forced from the field early in the 2nd half. Callum Kennett took the gloves in the second half and it’s easy to see why he has been marked for higher honours. Although the 2nds lost heavily they played the game against Latino’s in incredible spirits.
Red Sox
The Breakers men’s 1st team keeps its unbeaten form alive with a 90 minute equalizer from Lee Rufer. Anyone that’s played at Wembley will understand how difficult it is to come away with points. The Steve Parry reserve side couldn’t hold off Levin AFC and went down 4-0. LAtions notched double figures but must be commended for the spirit they played the game in against PNBHS. Legends again showing they still have 2-0 against Levin Vets.
Takaro AFC
Took points again in a 1-1 all draw against Hokowhitu. Tom Addy netting for Takaro. Glory stuck it to Resonant Masters side from Marist and won 2-0.
