For decades now, Eastland Junior Football have been the leading light in Tairāwhiti for youth football, coordinating the winter leagues under the Super League banner.
Thousands of youth players have come and gone throughout the years, as have many passionate and willing volunteers.
Behind the scenes for several months now, Eastland Junior Football and Central Football have been in discussions around collaborating to positively affect change in Tairāwhiti from 2025 and beyond.
Over a two-year period, EJF and Central Football will look to change how these competitions are delivered.
As change is never easy, we wanted to do this as a stepped approach to bring players, parents, volunteers, and clubs along with us on the journey. With the aim of growing the game and maintaining the positive and inclusive approach that's always been.
Spokesman for EJF David Ure had this to say: "When approached to discuss the matter, we were open to looking at a new direction and how EJF could be part of the changing landscape for the betterment of football within the region. We're committed to supporting this transition and helping the game thrive."
Central Footballs Federation Operations Manager, Donald Piper, had this to say: "Many good people have gone through the doors at EJF, and what they've done for the game is unmeasurable. What we are going to do is build from this base and look to make incremental changes over the next few seasons to impact the game and the experience in a positive manner."
What does this mean for 2025?
The Super League will be renamed to Eastern U13 and Eastern Youth League. Expressions of interest were sent out to all Tairāwhiti clubs to gauge which clubs wanted to be involved. There may also be small tweaks to the format; these are still being considered.
What next?
EJF and Central Football will call for player interest in late March. Emailing the relevant schools and social media pages with registration links.
