Introducing our Youth Council Members - Erina Gilchrist

Erina Gilchrist is one of 11 members (aged 15-24) of the Central Football Youth Council which was established in late 2024.  The main purpose of the Youth Council is to enable the Federation to respond to the needs of youth by creating a voice that represents that age demographic.

Located in Taranaki, Erina has been a player since the age of 12. Her passion for the sport drove her to seek a position on her club's board and the Central Football Youth Council, where she could delve into the intricacies of the game.

We had the opportunity to speak with Erina to gain insight into her motivations for joining the Central Football Youth Council and to learn more about her aspirations for the future.

Central: What is your background in football?

Erina: I was first introduced to football when I was 12 by one of my close friends and since then have quickly developed a passion for the game. Over the years I have played in all positions and love the competitive nature of the game. This year I wanted to expand my knowledge from just being a player to being on the committee for my club, Moturoa AFC. This has helped me to experience first hand the work that goes into making a successful football club. My journey has not only been about playing but also understanding the game from different perspectives.

Central: What do you love most about being involved in football?

Erina: What I love most about football is the sense of community it creates. Whether it’s playing alongside teammates, the competitive spirit on the field, or the friendships formed through the sport, football has always been more than just a game for me. It pushes me to stay fit, work hard, and continuously improve while enjoying the social and supportive environment of the club.

Central: What was your motivation to become a Youth Council Member?

Erina: I wanted to take my involvement in football beyond just playing. Being a part of the Central Youth Council allows me to contribute back to the football community in a meaningful way. I want to help encourage young girls to give football a go as well as being a voice for all people passionate about football.

Central: What is the pathway for you in football administration in the future?

Erina: I see myself continuing to be involved in football, whether through coaching, refereeing, or taking on leadership roles within football administration. I’m interested in learning more about how the game is organized at different levels and possibly contributing to the development of youth football programs. My goal is to help create opportunities for young players and ensure football remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
