Congratulations to Bluewater Hotel Taradale who have captured the inaugural GR Engineering Women’s Federation League title for 2017.
Taradale edged past Rothbury Insurance Brokers Port Hill 1-0 at Marewa Park yesterday to wrap up the title with two games still to play. Coach Dave Carswell couldn’t have been happier.
“I am absolutely stoked and very proud of the girls who have been fantastic all season,” Carswell said.
“We really didn’t set any specific goals at the start of the league and just wanted to be competitive in what has turned out to be a really good and competitive competition. To lead the competition from week three or four and then win it with two games still to play is beyond what we expected.”
Carswell made special mention of his senior players. Alex Simons and Alex Dickenson both modelled consistency and led by example, while the league’s top scorer by some distance, Aleesha Heywood, was the difference in a number of games with vital goals. He also praised his young back four who he felt excelled as a unit, as well as young keeper Brooke Bennett, who at times, was absolutely outstanding.
“The aim is obviously to keep the bulk, if not all, of this team together for next season and with another years’ experience, the likes of Aimee Atkins, Charlotte Lancaster and others, will ensure that we are at least very competitive again.”
Taradale’ s two remaining games are at home this Sunday against second placed Palmerston North Marist and then against New Plymouth Girls High School in Palmerston North the following week. There is no doubt in Carswell’s mind that they will be looking to finish what has been a fantastic season on a high with two additional wins.
